Starting in the Fall of 2014, HMS will be offering an online foreign language program through Rosetta Stone.
GoalTo provide each student with the opportunity to learn a new language at their own pace in order to promote this emerging college and career readiness skill.
Rosetta Stone is the world's leader in language acquisition. Thousands of businesses, government offices and schools have implemented Rosetta Stone in their organization. Over 20,000 schools in the United States utilize Rosetta Stone in some capacity for their language programs. Our goal at HMS is to give each student the opportunity to begin the journey to learning a new language as a way to advance their college and career readiness once they leave high school.
Students in grades 5-8 will have the opportunity to sign up for this program during one of their encore rotations. Each student will progress through the program by working each day for 30 minutes at his or her own pace under the the facilitation of a trained staff member at HMS. This will take place in our 5-6th grade computer lab and will include periodic "application practices" where students work to apply what they have learned through conversations with other students learning the same language.
Progress MonitoringOne of the great advantages of Rosetta Stone in schools is the management feature so that each student's progress can easily be monitored. The class will be set up as a pass/fail and only those students who are motivated to learn a new language should sign up for the program. Parents can be updated on the progress of their child at anytime requested.
Mobile AccessAnother great thing about this program is that all features are accessible at home or on a mobile device. Because the license is tied to an individual student account through any web browser or the Rosetta Stone mobile app, students can continue practicing at home or anywhere their mobile device allows. This is especially important for those who want to continue to the program throughout the summers and over extended holiday breaks. You can download the Rosetta Stone App through the App Store and use the unique student login to gain access to all of the available features they have available to them at school.
Self-Paced and DifferentiatedThe Rosetta Stone program allows each student to work at his or her own pace and adapts to ensure that students are challenged at their specific skill deficit. Because students work for approximately 30 minutes each day at their own pace, we feel that this program will not become monotonous or boring for the students. There will also be opportunity for each student to apply their learning through real life conversations with fellow students throughout the program.Available Languages
