Course Description
7th Grade Math is designed to facilitate the transition from the concrete concepts of arithmetic to the abstract concepts of pre-Algebra or Algebra. Instructional time will focus on six critical areas: (1) applying and extending previous understandings of operations with rational numbers; (2) working with expressions and linear equations; (3) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples; (5) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (6) investigating chance processes while developing, using, and evaluating probability models. Also, note taking strategies will help students develop study skills and conceptual understanding.

  • 3 Ring Binder (1 inch) with dividers (bellwork, assignments, quizzes, tests, other)
  • Loose Leaf Notebook Paper (college or wide rule)
  • Pencils with Erasers
  • Colored pen (any color except black)
  • Dry Erase Markers (dark colors only)
  • Composition Book for notes

Homework
Homework assignments will be available on Infinite Campus, as well as, given at the conclusion of each lesson, and on Mrs. Brinkerhoff’s webpage at Hesston Middle School (http://ms.hesstonschools.org/STAFF/teacher_pages/brinkerhoff__elise). Since the students will not have a textbook, homework sheets will be provided in class and will be available on the webpage above if the student needs to finish his/her work at home. Please let me know if your student will not be able to access the assignments/lessons online.

Homework Policy
Homework will be due at the beginning of the class period. Students will be required to accurately grade and correct their homework in pen. Homework will be collected each day. If the students did the assignment on time, showed their work, and corrected their mistakes in pen, they will receive 1 homework point for the day. If their homework is late, if work is not shown, if it is graded poorly or not corrected, they will receive a zero for that day.
*This policy is in place to protect students who are giving their best to complete the homework and learn from their mistakes, but may struggle with mathematics.

Homework that is due on the day of an unplanned absence is due on the day the student returns and is not considered late. There is no homework accepted after that time without prior approval from the teacher. Homework for a planned absence (school sponsored or otherwise) may be turned in before the student leaves or upon their return to class or it is considered late. Extended absences will be considered individually.

Tests and Quizzes
There will normally be 3-4 quizzes and 2 tests per unit. Quiz questions will be similar to the test questions and are a very important part of test preparation.

If student is absent the day of a test or quiz, they will make it up upon returning as soon as possible within as many days as they were absent (e.g. if student is absent 2 days, the test/quiz will be taken within 2 days of his/her return). If a student will be absent due to a planned activity (school sponsored or otherwise), the student may take the test or quiz early or take it upon his/her return to class. Longer absences will be considered on an individual basis.

Classwork
Bellwork and notes will be checked and considered part of the overall classwork grade. 

Student Integrity
Because personal integrity is of highest priority, it deserves special mention. Honesty and integrity are virtues that are continually and purposefully cultivated in our lives. In this class, students are expected to complete the required assignments by the due date and all work contained on any assignment and/or test must be completely your own. While you may ask another student for an explanation, you may never ask or allow another student to copy work.  Taking work or answers from another student, in any form and on any assignment, will be grounds for discipline. If you find yourself in difficulty or are tempted to compromise your integrity, please come see me so that we can find an honorable solution.

HINTS FOR SUCCESS!!

There are 4 main reasons that students are not successful in Course 2:

1.  They are not precise in their work.  To be precise you must be neat, organized, and show your work.   

Math requires precision.

2.  They don’t focus during instruction.  You MUST work at not getting distracted.  If you don’t hear the entire explanation or follow along carefully during examples, your homework will be difficult...and then, of course, so will your quizzes and tests.

3. The don't do their homework. You cannot do your best if you don't get the practice you need!

4.  They lack the basic skills.  Communicate with Mrs. Brinkerhoff or your parents if you find you are missing basic skills, and let us know so that we can arrange for extra help!
