BULLYING:

The Kansas Legislature has passed HB 68 that addresses the issue of bullying in schools.

HMS Counseling Plan:  Diminish bullying from the school environment by engaging students, staff, and community members for a whole-school approach against bullying and re-enforcing respect in our building

Hesston Middle School has developed a preventative policy as it relates to bullying.   Taking a proactive stance on treating others with respect has become a school-wide effort as the staff and students will continue to teach, model, and practice interventions to diminish bullying through the various plan components listed below. Hesston Middle School does not accept behavior that infringes on the safety of any student by the definition of bullying. Bullying as defined for our students and staff in RS:

“Because Bullying has – in recent years -  been spotlighted by the media, definitions of the term have been interpreted differently. It is important that students and staff know what bullying is, what to look for, and then ultimately, how to support should it happen. It takes everyone’s help to make our school a school filled with RESPECT. As defined by The Dept. of Education:

  • Bullying is any unwanted aggressive behavior(s) by another youth or group of youths who are not siblings that involves an observed or perceived power imbalance and is repeated multiple times. Bullying may inflict harm or distress on the targeted youth including physical, psychological, social, or educational harm.

The key or important part of this definition is the imbalance of power (in other words, without a way or resources to fight back) that takes place in bullying. Often times, adults and kids alike become confused by what bullying is or is not.

Rude = Inadvertently saying or doing something that hurts someone else.

Mean = Purposefully saying/doing something to hurt someone once or maybe twice.

Conflict = something that happens normally between two or more people – it is common and normal when people are together often.

Bullying = Intentionally aggressive behavior, repeated over time, that involves an imbalance of power.


Should your student need help in this area, please tell him/her to visit with an adult immediately and/or come to the office.

What To Do If You or Someone You Know is Being Bullied?
Telling an adult that you or a friend is being bullied, isn't tattling. Tattling is when you tell on another kid to get her into trouble. Telling is when you tell something that helps someone get out of trouble or keeps someone from getting hurt! So, if you or a friend is being bullied:

  • Tell someone. Tell your teacher. Tell your parents. Tell a friend. Tell the principal or your guidance counselor.  These people will listen and help you decide what to do. If this is happening, tell an adult!
  • If the person you told can not help you or does not do anything, find someone else! Never keep being bullied a secret!
  • Your school has ways for you to report bullying. You can always tell an adult at school.
  • Your parents can report bullying for you. Ask them to talk to your school principal or your teacher.
  • When you report bullying make sure you tell who the bully is, how you are being bullied, when it happens, and where it happens.
